There are various agencies that can provide free legal assistance and support:
Women’s Legal Service
Statewide legal advice line: 9.30-1pm Monday to Thursday
This line is very busy and it can be difficult to get through. Call 07 3392 0670 or 1800 677 278 (Outside Brisbane).
Evening Advice sessions: Legal advice sessions are held every Monday and Wednesday evening from 6pm-8pm. You can drop in at these times for legal advice. All advice is individual and confidential, and no appointment is required. Women are requested to attend by 6pm. Due to demand, interviews may be limited to 20 minutes. Sometimes, due to high numbers, we may not be able to support you.
Legal Aid Queensland
A statutory authority that provides legal information, advice and representation to financially disadvantaged Queenslanders. For legal information and referrals, call 1300 65 11 88 (cost of a local call in Australia).
DV Connect
A state-wide 24 hour, 7 day a week service for women and their children experiencing domestic and/or family violence. This service is staffed by a team of professional counsellors who provide crisis intervention, support, information, advocacy, telephone counselling, referrals and, importantly, the statewide coordination of emergency refuge and shelter placements across Queensland. Brisbane Domestic Violence Advocacy Service
A community based organisation that provides a free and confidential advocacy and support service for women, children, family members and individuals affected by domestic and family violence in the Brisbane Metropolitan area. For support call 07 3217 2544. Open Monday to Friday 9am-4.45pm.
